I haven't seen Michael yet, but I have spent some time thinking with James Howard Hill Jr. insightful words on the film. It sounds like this film is most eventful when it asks much of the audience. As Hill said, how exactly does one watch horror?
As a self-identified feminist, I felt a lot of dissonance about liking movies that treat women in a way that I do not agree with at all. It was disappointing to realize the whole entertainment industry, which often is described as the most liberal industry is sexist just like society as a whole. However, I immediately thought of one movie that was different - 9 to 5.
If one’s working definition of “religion” is more capacious than “beliefs in supernatural powers,” if the purpose of the course is to view American history and culture through the lens of “religion” – as a category of analysis, rather than a found thing – then new possibilities emerge.
