Tis the season for Call for Papers, or as we sometimes call them, CFPs. I’ll be sharing here some of the CFPs coming to my desk and why I think you might consider submitting a proposal. The first one up is for the Society of Comparative Research on Iconic and Performative Texts (aka SCRIPT) for panels at the annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the American Academy of Religion (AAR).

Call for papers: Honoring the work and legacy of James W. Watts: Beginning in the early 2000s, James Watts and Dorina Parmenter began conversations that would become the Iconic Books Project, and later evolved into the Society for Comparative Research on Iconic and Performative Texts. Now, as he begins his transition to retirement, we celebrate the ongoing work and legacy of James W. Watts. Papers are invited that engage with Watts’s methodological and theoretical work on clarifying and identifying the concept of Iconic Books, as well as papers that look at Watts’s role in the development and impact of the Iconic Books Project and SCRIPT over the past two decades. Papers both accepted and submitted to this section will be considered for inclusion in an upcoming special issue of Postscripts Journal, honoring Watts and his work.

AAR CFP:
SESSION 1 – OPEN CALL: SCRIPT invites proposals on any aspect of iconic and performative texts. Examples include but are not limited to their display as cultural artifacts, their ritual use in religious and political ceremonies, their performance by recitation and theater, their depiction in art, and their display in museums.
SESSION 2 – UNDER ERASURE: SCRIPT invites proposals on aspects of iconic and performative texts in times of censorship or erasure. Examples include but are not limited to the creation of palimpsests, hidden or smuggled books, public acts of removal or destruction, political pressures on authors or users to renounce or disavow texts, and other situations where texts are placed semantically, performatively, or iconically “under erasure.”

WHY YOU SHOULD SUBMIT
If you’re looking for a place at the annual meetings to explore texts beyond traditional canon boundaries and exegesis, this is the spot. It’s a great place for graduate students looking to find their place. Also these panels are a great pathway to peer-reviewed publications. The papers presented here have a good chance of winding up into Postscripts: The Journal of Sacred Texts, Cultural Histories, and Contemporary Contexts.
