Throughout 2025, we hosted Off-Script, a monthly conversation on scriptures, scholarship, and our subfield. Sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, the Institute for Signifying Scriptures, and the Society for Comparative Research on Iconic and Performative Texts, these Zoom discussions have been a great place to both develop and showcase a critical comparative approach to the study of scriptures.
In 2025 we hosted 8 gatherings and 2 professional development sessions. Participants came from over 35 universities and 8 different countries. We are looking forward to bringing more to you in 2025-2026.
Our first gathering is going to be September 12. Dr. Rachel Schwaller (University of Kansas) will be presenting. We are also looking forward to presentations from Dr. Hannah Jung (University of Alabama) and Dr. Seth Perry (Princeton University) later in the semester.
Also, stay tuned for a professional develoment gathering on pedagogy and a CFP for a special journal issue–all on engaging a critical comparative approach to scriptures.
