I am pleased to annouce that the Department of Religious Studies at the Unviersity of Alabama is hiring, and that I am chairing the search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Computational Study of Religion.
Areas of specialization (historic period, region, or group studied) are open; however, the successful candidate must complement and enhance the current specialties of the Department to understand religion as an element of culture. The candidate’s research should be articulated as part of a broader scholarly attempt to answer cross-cultural questions related to identity, power, and discourse using computational and/or data science methods and theories. This position will enhance the continued development of the Digital Humanities portion of our BA and MA programs. Currently, we are expanding computational and digital humanities offerings in our BA program. Our MA in Religion in Culture is a cutting-edge program, unique in the nation, that trains students in digital skills for both analysis of data and presentation of research. This position will also be affiliated with the REL Digital Lab (RELdl), a collaborative space for the development of digital projects within the Department.
Please see the official details here.
I encourage you to share within your networks both in the academic study of religion and in other pertinent fields. Our department is a great place to work and to build a future. My colleague, K. Merinda Simmons (a PhD scholar of English letters), put it nicely in her recent blog post on the Study Religion blog, “What We “Do” Is How We Think.”
