My name is Richard Newton. I am an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama where I research scriptures and identity politics. I study the texts that people read and that seem to read them back. And I teach on the difference that religion, race, and scriptures make in cultural formation. Leveraging social theory, digital tools, and comparative insights, I am interested in making a more verdant public discourse on matters too important to ignore. Sowing the Seed is one place where we can make that happen.

With measured insights on the Bible in public life, scriptures and race in the USA, and pedagogy in higher education, Newton is a trusted voice to which international media outlets turn for sharp commentary and rich conversation.

An engaging pedagogue, Newton’s blend of digital tools, cooperative learning, and vast experience has earned him a reputation as a teacher of teachers in the academic study of religion and the humanities in general.
